Let’s cry out against war all over the world! 世界中で戦争反対をさけびましょう！

Thank you for scanning the QR code of my artwork. This time, I’ve created two types of works for the New York joint exhibition: ① video works and ② photo works. The purpose of these creations is to “build a world without war.”

Do you know about this? On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb in human history was dropped on Hiroshima, instantly killing more than 100,000 people. After witnessing the power of this atomic bomb, humanity should have realized that “nothing is more cruel and tragic than war” and “nuclear weapons must never be used.”

However, there are currently about 12,700 nuclear weapons in the world (as of January 2022). Furthermore, as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, verbal confrontations regarding the use of nuclear weapons escalate, making the risk of using nuclear weapons higher than ever.

Now is the time for humanity to unite and say, “We must not repeat the mistake made in Hiroshima” and start taking actions to build peace. I created my artwork with such thoughts in mind. From here, I will introduce the “artwork” and “artist profile.”

• 今回、私がニューヨーク共同個展に向けて制作した作品は「①動画作品」「②写真作品」の2つです。制作の目的は「戦争のない世界を構築すること」です。
• 皆さんはご存知でしょうか。1945年8月6日、人類史上初めて広島に原子爆弾が投下され、一瞬にして、十数万人が亡くなったことを。
• この原子爆弾の威力を目の当たりにした人類は、「戦争ほど残酷で悲惨なものはない」「核兵器は絶対に使用してはならない」と認識したはずです。
• しかし、この恐ろしい核兵器は、現在、世界に約1万2700発あります(2022年1月時点)。さらにロシアとウクライナとの戦争が長期化する中で、核兵器の使用を巡って言葉による牽制がエスカレートしており、核兵器を使用するリスクは今、最も高まっているのです。
• 今こそ、人類は「広島で起こった過ちを繰り返してはならない」と団結し、平和を構築するための行動を始めるべきです。
• 私は、そんな思いを込めて作品を制作しました。今から「作品の紹介」「作者プロフィール」を述べていきます。

1. Please watch the video “Citizens of the earth.”（動画「世界市民」をご覧ください）

Let’s stop war immediately! Let’s aim to create a society where everyone is respected as a person, overcoming differences in race, nationality, thoughts, history, culture, and religion! With these thoughts in mind, I wrote on paper with ink: “World Citizen – Nothing is more tragic than war, nothing is more precious than peace.”

• 直ちに戦争をやめましょう！
• 人種、国籍、思想、歴史、文化、宗教などの違いをのりこえ、誰もが、人として尊重される社会の実現をめざしましょう！
• そんな思いを込めて「世界市民〜戦争ほど悲惨なものはない、平和ほど尊いものはない〜」と墨で紙に書きました。

2.Please take a look at the photo work “We Must Not Repeat the Mistake Made in Hiroshima.”（写真作品「広島で起こった過ちを繰り返してはならない」をご覧ください）

(1)To avoid repeating mistakes, “What should humanity do?”（過ちを繰り返さないために「人類は何をすべきなのか」）

We must not repeat the mistake that happened in Hiroshima in 1945. So, what should humanity do? I believe we should take the following “two actions”: The first is “learning from the tragedy of the atomic bomb used in Hiroshima.” The second is “each person taking action for peace.” And so, I wanted to create a work that encourages these “two actions.” This photo is the completed work.

• 1945年に広島で起こった過ちを繰り返してはいけません。そのために人類は何をすべきなのか？
• 私は、つぎの“２つの行動”をとるべきだと考えます。
• １つ目は「広島で使用された原子爆弾の惨禍を学ぶこと」
• ２つ目は「一人ひとりが平和行動を起こすこと」
• そして私は、「“２つの行動”を促す」作品を作りたいと思ったのです。完成した作品が、この写真です。

(2) “Four Wishes” to promote “Two Actions.”「２つの行動」を促すための「４つの願い」

To encourage these “two actions,” I created a photo work that includes “four wishes.” Now, let me introduce the four wishes.

• この“２つの行動”を促すために、私は「４つの願い」を入れた写真作品を制作しました。
• ここで、4つの願いを紹介します。

First wish: “I want people to learn about the horrors of atomic bombs.”（１つ目の願い「原子爆弾の悲惨さを学んでほしい」）

From the wish “I want people to learn about the tragedy of the atomic bomb,” I used the Atomic Bomb Dome as the background. The Atomic Bomb Dome is registered as a World Heritage site as a “common peace monument for humanity, conveying the horrors of nuclear weapons and advocating for the importance of lasting peace.” I really hope people will learn from it.

• 「原子爆弾の悲惨さを学んでほしい」という願いから、背景を原爆ドームにしました。
• 原爆ドームは「核兵器の惨禍を伝え、恒久平和の大切さを訴える人類共通の平和記念碑」として世界遺産に登録されています。ぜひ学んでほしいです。

Second wish: “I hope the mistake of using nuclear weapons will not be repeated.”（２つ目の願い「核兵器使用という過ちを繰り返さないでほしい」）

I had the model wear a mask because of the wish “we must not use atomic bombs.” It’s a message to the nuclear-armed countries, saying “please don’t repeat the mistake of using nuclear weapons.”

• モデルにマスクをつけさせたのは、「原爆を使ってはいけない」という願いからです。
• 核保有国に対して「核兵器使用という過ちを繰り返さないでほしい」というメッセージです。

Third wish: “I want you to take action for peace as well.”（３つ目の願い「あなたも平和行動を起こしてほしい」）

I’ve set up a QR code so you can read this blog by scanning it. In this blog, I’ve included messages like “The risk of using nuclear weapons is at its highest now” and a video with the wish “Let’s unite for peace, humanity!” These are the actions for peace I’ve taken. Now that you’re reading this, why not try taking some actions for peace yourself?

You can practice these actions for peace in your daily life, such as “exchanging opinions with friends and family,” “spreading peace on social media,” “participating in volunteer activities,” “showing interest in human rights,” “attending peace education,” and “helping others.” These actions can also have a positive impact on you and the people around you.

• QRコードを読み取れば、このブログを読めるようにしました。
• このブログには、「今、核兵器を使用するリスクが最も高まっている」とのメッセージや「人類が平和のために団結しよう！」との願いを込めた動画も入れました。
• これらは、私が起こした平和行動です。
• これを今、読まれているあなたも、平和行動を起こしてみませんか。
• 「友達と家族と意見交換」「SNSで平和を広める」「ボランティア活動」「人権に関心を持つ」「平和学習を受ける」「他者を助ける」等、これらの平和行動は、日常生活の中で実践できます。また自分自身や周囲の人々にもポジティブな影響を与えることができます。

Fourth wish: “I hope for global anti-war voices.”（４つ目の願い「世界中で戦争反対をさけびましょう！」）

• 「世界中の人々が戦争反対の声をあげてほしい」という願いから背景には世界29言語で「戦争反対」の文字を入れました。
• 1日でも早く「戦争のない世界」を実現するために、この文字にハッシュタブをつけて、「笑顔」や「美しい風景」といった写真、すてきな言葉や詩などをSNSで発信しましょう！
• 世界には約46億の人々がSNSを利用しています。世界の約6割の数になります（2022年1月時点）。
• その一人ひとりが、平和を願う発信をすれば、びっくりするくらいの大きな力になることは間違いありません。そして戦争は止まると信じます。

3.Profile（作者プロフィール）

Ryuichi Arai （Arai Century）Born in 1972. Master of Education. I have been a primary school teacher for 18 years, worked for the Board of Education for 5 years, and am now working as a manager at a public primary school. In addition, I founded a circle called SUNPEACE in 2018 and have been working on sharing the history of the war that took place in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture (Note 1). In 2018, I held a peace gathering in Sanda City, and since 2019, I have been releasing YouTube videos calling for peace every year on July 19th, the day of the Sanda air raid.

• 書家名 荒井千丶利（あらい せんちゅりー）
• 1972年生まれ。教育学修士。
• 私は小学校教師を18年。教育委員会で5年。そして現在は、公立小学校の管理職として働いています。
• その傍ら、2018年にSUNPEACEというサークルを立ち上げて、兵庫県三田市で起こった戦争の歴史を発信する取組（※1）を行ってきました。2018年には三田市で平和集会を開催。2019年からは毎年、三田空襲が起こった7月19日に、平和を訴えるYouTube動画を配信しています。

There is a reason why I am working on this initiative to “create a world without war.” It is to fulfill a promise I made to 100 children I met in 2012. Let me tell you a little about that promise. At the time, those children were in the sixth grade, and their daily lives were full of conflict and many problems, such as violent incidents. A significant turning point came for them: a school trip to Hiroshima. Visiting the Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome, and hearing the experiences of the survivors, their hearts seemed to be deeply moved. They truly learned about the horrors of war and the importance of peace.

After the school trip, they began activities to share the importance of peace with others (Note 2). They held a peace event called “PEACE FORUM” and told more than 200 local residents about the horrors of war. They also held an exhibition called “Towards a World Without War” and shared the importance of peace with over 10,000 people. The local residents were amazed at the children’s serious efforts, and the local media gave them significant coverage. Through their efforts, the children’s group changed, with conflicts disappearing and unity and cooperation taking their place.

This practice won the highest award in the 63rd Yomiuri Education Award, which is considered the most prestigious education award in Japan.

• 私が今、こうして「戦争のない世界の実現へ」の取組を行なっているのには理由があります。
• 2012年に出会った100名の子どもたちとの誓いを果たすためです。
• その誓いについて、少々、話をさせてください。
• その子どもたちは当時６年生でした。彼らは日々争いごとが絶えず、暴力事案等、問題が多発していました。そんな彼らに大きな転機が訪れます。広島への修学旅行です。平和記念資料館や原爆ドームを見学し、被爆者の体験を聞くなかで、彼らの心は大きく揺さぶられたように見えました。戦争の悲惨さ、平和の尊さを心から学んだのです。
• そして彼らは、修学旅行後、平和の尊さを人々に伝える活動を始めたのです。（※2）
• 彼らは「PEACE FORUM」という平和イベントを開催して、200名以上の地域住民に戦争の悲惨さを伝えました。さらに「戦争のない世界へ」という展示会を開催して、1万人を超える人に平和の尊さを伝えました。その子どもたちの真剣な取組に地域住民は驚き、地元メディアも大きく取り上げました。彼らは、その取組を行うなかで、争いごとはなくなり、団結と協調する集団へと変わっていきました。
• この実践は日本で最高権威の教育賞とされる読売教育賞において、第63回読売教育賞で最優秀賞を受賞しました。

The 100 children and I made a promise: “To continue doing what we can throughout our lives to create a world without war.” Right now, wars are happening around the world. Every day, precious lives are lost due to fighting. The people of the world must unite and do everything they can to stop the wars.

That’s why I decided to create and exhibit art pieces advocating for peace at my solo exhibition in New York.

• その彼ら100名と私は誓いました。
• 「生涯、戦争のない世界の実現に向けて、自分にできることをやり続ける」と。
• 今、世界では戦争が起こっています。毎日、戦闘により尊い命がなくなっています。世界市民が団結して、何としても戦争を止めなければなりません。
• だから私は、ニューヨークの個展で平和を訴える作品を制作して出品しようと決めたのです。

• 今回の作品制作には、多くの協力者がいます。1番の協力者は島谷樹さんです。
• 広島での撮影と写真編集、書道の動画撮影と編集を行ってくれたのは島谷さんです。「このような写真・動画を作りたい」「世界の言語を背景につけたい」といった私の願いをすべてかなえてくれたのが島谷さんです。
• また「マスクにQRコード」という提案をしてくれたのは妻でした。さらに動画撮影時には、学生さんや留学生さんも協力してくださいました。
• 制作に力を貸してくれた方々に心から感謝しています。本当にありがとうございました。
